The GAMeC - Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art is one of the centres of excellence in the northern Italian art scene. It was inaugurated in 1991 with the aim of promoting modern and contemporary art, by creating a veritable art hub consisting of the Accademia Carrara Art Gallery, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Gallery.

The GAMeC is housed in treasured buildings formerly occupied by the 15th-century Monastery of Dimesse and Servite, facing the neoclassical building which hosts the Carrara Academy. The building's restoration project, entrusted to Studio Gregotti Associates International, involved a renovation of more than 2000 square metres, including 1,500 used for exhibition spaces.

GAMeC actively collaborates with museums and contemporary art centres worldwide. Some if its closest collaborators include the SMAK in Gent, Fundación PROA of Buenos Aires, the Kunsthaus of Bregenz, Musée national d'art moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the CIAP - Centre International d'Art du Paysage & Ile de Vassivière, the Malmö Konsthall in Malmö and the Mucsarnok Kunsthalle in Budapest.

In addition to having a permanent collection of more than three hundred works by 20th-century artists, the museum hosts a wide array of cultural initiatives, including highly popular exhibitions and events in addition to numerous educational activities.

The activities proposed by the Educational Services include operational laboratories for children, projects and workshops for schools of all types and levels, specialised meetings for associations and libraries, courses and programs - for adults, families and seniors - training opportunities for teachers, summer workshops for children and teens, specific activities dedicated to universities, prisons, the Union of the Blind, day centres and other programs for the disabled, and even museum tours "in very language in the world" for schools, immigrants and foreign tourists.

During the year the museum is also used as a venue for private events, allowing companies, organisations and institutions to offer their guests and clients an unforgettable experience in an exceptional setting.
