Masnago Castle is home to the Varese Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art that displays a collection of paintings, sculptures and graphics created predominantly by Lombard artists between the 16th and the 20th centuries. The collection is exhibited in the castle's 15th century wing, while the 18th century wing is used for temporary exhibitions, the museum's educational activities and as a conference room, overlooking the park. The 15th century wing of the Masnago Castle is renowned for its rooms frescoed in International Gothic style: the Hall of Leisure and the Hall of Vices and Virtues. These frescoes enrich the exhibition experience introducing new elements with which to compare the works.

In 1995 the collection of modern and contemporary art was arranged in chronological order with a rich series of explanatory panels that connect the works to the Lombardy region. Numerous works have been added to the collection, including the Bolchini-De Grandi donation bequeathed in 1965, which gave life to the museum and to whom a room is dedicated. Over the years, additional works of art both modern and contemporary art have been added thanks to other donations. Some of the most notable works include pieces by Giacomo Balla, Hayez, Bruno Munari, Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and Renato Guttuso.
